TerraSafe Materials
TerraSafe Materials, Inc. is a material science company developing new materials, coatings, and applications for truly sustainable packaging. We specialize in the development of biopolymer compounds to displace traditional petroleum based packaging.
As the first company formed within BIV’s Generation Food Rural Partners (GFRP) Fund, TerraSafe Materials licenses intellectual property from multiple universities collaborating to develop novel materials to reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the environment.
Scott Bolin, CEO
Scott has over 10 years’ global leadership experience spanning IP Licensing, hard tech commercialization, and consumer products.
He has raised significant venture capital, built multiple teams, launched several products and startups, and developed strategy/go-to-market plans across several industries.
Prior to TerraSafe Materials, he founded Tethis, a biomaterials company spinout from NC State University in 2012 and Next Century Spirits, a materials startup in the BevAlc space in 2018. Both companies developed innovative and sustainably focused-technology from the benchtop to commercial level, raising more than $50m in venture capital. They have both been recognized for their innovative approaches by Forbes, Entrepreneur, WSJ, and many other publications.
Dr. Julie Willoughby, Chief Technology Officer at TerraSafe Materials
Dr. Willoughby is the Chief Innovation Officer of Blue Hummingbird, LLC where she combines scientific and creative design to help clients commercialize climate-positive technology. She served as the Chief Scientific and Commercialization Officer at Circ®, Inc. from 2019-2023; leading the team from recycling one t-shirt a day in a lab reactor to a semi-commercial continuous operation. This work led Circ® to be a 2023 The Earthshot Prize finalist. Previous to her entrepreneurial roles with start-up companies, Willoughby drove corporate entrepreneurship in Nike’s material and manufacturing innovation departments and served as a faculty member in the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. She is an expert in the fields of textiles & nonwovens, surface chemistry & surface dynamics, coatings, and utilization of renewable resources as feedstock for advanced materials. Her work as the principal investigator for a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge Exploration grant resulted in a commercial “Wrap & Plant” cellulosic fiber technology that provided smallholder farmers in Africa with over a 50% increase in their crop yields. Willoughby is an avid scientific author and inventor in the areas of polymers, silicone chemistry, interfacial and surface science, and barrier packaging. Her 25+ year career as a chemical engineer has spanned multiple industries – chemical, pulp & paper, packaging, life sciences, textiles and fashion.
Dr. Willoughby has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Caleb Meredith, Head of Science and Technology at TerraSafe Materials
Caleb is an experienced materials investigator and innovator with a background in soft matter research and technology translation from lab to production.
Prior to TerraSafe, he founded Chromatir Technologies during his PhD at Penn State University in 2021 to commercialize a new class of structurally colored materials for anticounterfeiting and optical sensing applications. His diverse research portfolio includes projects spanning biopolymers, colloids, and emulsions, published in Nature, Matter, and other leading scientific journals.
Curtis O’Brien, Chief of Staff at TerraSafe Materials
Curtis O’Brien is the Chief of Staff at TerraSafe Materials, where he leverages his extensive in creating partnerships, project management and implementing new tools and systems for organizations. Curtis has experience working in Government, international development NGO, and private sectors for sustainability-focused organizations implementing Australia’s first consumer rebate program for zero-emission vehicles, implementing new programs for residential and commercial solar uptake, securing substantial grants for international development initiatives and co-ordinating diverse teams.
Curtis holds a postgraduate degree in Environmental Science and remains dedicated to environmental sustainability and community development. In addition to his professional endeavors, he volunteers as a coach and board member for the North Carolina Australian Rules Football team.
